BPB Game Jam
Name Age Gender
This is a private entry to the 2021 Game Jam by the bpb (German federal agency for civic education). The topic: Gender-Mainstreaming, Trans-Identität, (Anti-)Feminismus, Gender-Repräsentationen in Games, Intersektionalität, Queerness.
Or basically: I made a game about someone who is non-binary dealing with intrusive questions… by the player. The game reached 3rd place in the internal ranking despite being made in my one hour lunch break.
The game was made in Harlowe Twine.
The point of the game is twofold:
- Allow a safe place to ask questions. It’s a video game. I cannot check what routes the player selects. People can ask very intrusive questions and see how a non-binary person might react to it, but also get information on what non-binary even is.
- Providing non-binary people with possible template answers to intrusive questions. A lot of non-binary people are young, neurodiverse and everyone starts somewhere. With a template/script like this, people can have a starting point for their own definitions and feel more prepared for future confrontations.
Passing Through
Group project for the bpb Game Jam. I helped with developing the visuals and the message of our game. Due to time constraints, a lot of ideas had to be simplified.
“You are playing as a genderqueer, visibly genderqueer person, navigating your everyday surroundings with the everyday people in your life.
The everyday people in your life can be friends, colleagues, acquaintances…whose thinking is quite binary, as far as you know. You can evade their field of vision. You can also face them with your genderqueer Identity through entering their field of vision. Currently, you are on your way to your safe space.”
